Job Title:                  Academic Registrar

Duties and responsibilities of the academic registrar

The Academic registrar will carry out the following academic and administrative duties:

  • To direct the implementation of regulations governing student’s admission requirements for all programmes, ensuring that all students admitted to the various courses at ISTVS have the required qualifications.
  • To coordinate the implementation of all academic policies and procedure approved by the Governing Council.
  • To direct the safe custody of all documents and data relating to admissions, examinations and academic results.
  • In collaboration with the heads of departments, oversee the preparation of timetables for teaching and examinations in different programmes.
  • To coordinate timely preparation and setting of examinations.
  • To direct compliance with approved schedules for setting and marking examinations and release of results.
  • To coordinate the marking of examinations and making arrangements for submission to external examiners.
  • To oversee mechanism to ensure that there is no examination leakages or malpractices.
  • To coordinate and ensure that the ISTVS Academic Board approves all results before they are released.
  • To maintain a data bank of all results for ISTVS students.
  • To organise and coordinate the ISTVS Alumni.
  • To provide Secretariat services to the Academic and Examination Board at ISTVS.

Education and technical expertise

    - Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Arts with Education or Science with Education,

     - Human Resource Management, Public Administration, Management Studies from

      a recognized Institution or first degree with Post Graduate Diploma in Education.

     -A Masters in a relevant field in education is an added advantage.

Work experience

-      At least 3 years’ working experience.

-    Should be 28 – 35 years of age at the time of application.

Languages

  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Knowledge of Somali and /or Arabic is an advantage.

Competencies

            -Unquestionable integrity and good managerial skills.

            -Strong leadership and Communication skills.

            -Proficiency in computer applications.

Nationality

  • Preference is given to candidates of IGAD member states (Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Sudan, South Sudan).

Duties and responsibilities of the Agricultural Economist

The Agricultural Economist will carry out the following academic and administrative duties:

  • Implement the training courses in their entirety, especially Economics of Natural Resources, Firm Accounts and Planning, Micro enterprise development and management, Marketing and Trade of Dryland Commodities, Intermediate Macroeconomics, Quantitative methods in Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Institutional Economics, Principles of Resource use and Management.
  • Work with the curriculum development expert to revise the curriculum, as needs arise;
  • Develop lesson plans for training sessions;
  • Develop the student assessment system including setting, administering, marking and grading of exams;
  • Assist in the ordering and maintenance of all assets, materials and equipment for training students in her/his area of technical and subject expertise;
  • Be available for Reference Centre activities and other academic activities as agreed with the principal;
  • Attend coordination meetings as called by the School Principal;
  • Assist the School staff in the overall implementation of day to day activities;
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Education and technical expertise

  • The candidate should be an experienced Agricultural economist, with a minimum of a Masters in Agricultural economics or similar degree.
  • The candidate should have good grasp of agricultural economics biased towards dryland agriculture and livestock economics. Furthermore, a good understanding of natural resource management is important.

Work experience

The candidate should have a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience, with experience in the following fields being particularly desirable:

  • Semi-arid and arid lands with a pastoral and agro-pastoral economy
  • Matured teaching experience at tertiary level
  • Conversant with student centred teaching methodology

Languages

  • Fluency in written and spoken English
  • Knowledge of Somali and /or Arabic is an advantage

Competencies

  • Effective communication skills, in particular with students
  • Good team worker and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Good drafting, editing and writing skills (in English)

Duties and responsibilities of the Anatomy/Physiology/ Biochemistry expert

 

The Anatomy/Physiology/ Biochemistry expert will carry out the following academic and administrative duties:

  • Implement the training courses in their entirety, with regards to: Anatomy- body regions, integumentary system, species differences and microscopy, cytology and histology of skin, body cavities and organs, introduction to digestive system, monogastric and ruminant stomachs, defences and histology of digestive system, components of respiratory system and histology of respiratory system, osteology and myology, gross anatomy and histology of circulatory, excretory, endocrine and reproductive systems.

Physiology of integumentary system, cells, tissues and secretions and genetic conservation, animal feeds and feeding, physiology of digestive system, neural and hormonal regulations of the digestive system, physiology of respiratory system, mechanisms and control of breathing, hemoglobin and problems associated with breathing, neuromuscular physiology. Animal feeds and feeding, physiology of digestive system, neural and hormonal regulations of the digestive system. Physiology of respiratory system, mechanisms and control of breathing, hemoglobin and problems associated with breathing, neuromuscular physiology, circulatory, excretory, endocrine and reproductive physiology.

Cell biochemistry, monosaccharides, polysaccharides, Fatty acids, lipids and glycerol, eicosanoides and alcohols, proteins and nucleic acids. Ruminal ecology, digestion and biochemistry, enzymology, vitamins, major and trace elements, monogastric biochemistry, metabolism and bioenergetics. Respiratory and neuro-musculo-skeletal biochemistry. Muscle biochemistry (ATP production and Rigor mortis), immunoglobulins (antibodies), lipoproteins chylomicrons and hormonal biochemistry.

  • The candidate should have a good grasp of animal anatomy of animal species that are common in the drylands.

 

Work experience

The candidate should have a minimum of 2 years relevant work experience, with experience in the following fields being particularly desirable:

Consumption and output relationship; Aggregate demand and supply, marginal utilities and indifference curves, Economic planning and evaluation of diseases. National and international policies on diseases, Price analysis in diseases control, Introduction to economic data collection, management and analysis, Livestock financing and marketing;
  • Work with the curriculum development expert to revise the curriculum, as needs arise;
  • Develop lesson plans for training sessions;
  • Develop the student assessment system including setting, administering, marking and grading of exams;
  • Assist in the ordering and maintenance of all assets, materials and equipment for training students in her/his area of technical and subject expertise;

Duties and responsibilities of the Public Health Expert

 

The Public Health Expert will carry out the following academic and administrative duties:

  • Implement the training courses in their entirety, including Trade regulations, concept of equivalence agreements, Regionalization and harmonization of food trade, Food marketing channels, Structural, administrative and institutional SWOTs

Principles of ante and post mortem inspection, quarantine handling, test result interpretation, food hazards and food-borne infections, laboratory tests for animal products.

Applied virology, bacteriology, parasitology and mycology, zoonotic diseases, fevers, septicaemia, toxaemia, pigmentation, tumours, Contagious Caprine Pneumonia and black quarter. Animal welfare and veterinary ethics, inspection code for game meat, Codex Alimentarius, Food law, ISO.

Standards and Regulations in animal health and production, the terrestrial animal health code, obligations and ethics in international trade, risk analysis, import/export procedures, quarantine, Somali ecosystem animal health codes, animal welfare and veterinary oaths. Hierarchy of the veterinary structure and stakeholders in animal health and production.
