Tokyo foundation for Policy Research initiated the Ryoichi Sasakawa Young Leaders Fellowship Fund, or Sylff, in 1987 to support students pursuing graduate studies in the humanities and social sciences. Sylff is offering 1 PhD and 2 masters scholarships for the 2024/2025 academic year in the following programmes: Economics, Communication Studies, Development Studies and Sociology.
The applications are open only to applicants for the September 2024 intake.
General guidelines to applicants:
Eligible applicants must meet the following criteria, in addition to any other specific criteria set by their respective departments.
- Should have completed and graduated with an undergraduate degree or masters degree (for PhD applicants) from the University of Nairobi in the last two years
- Possess a first class or a second class upper division with a maximum grade capped at 65%.
- Must have been admitted for the September 2024 intake in the particular postgraduate programme.
- Scholarships are for full time students only; the student has to take the maximum number of units per semester.
- The Scholarship is offered on merit (preference will be offered to the best students).
- Active involvement in Leadership Activities
- Active involvement in research
- In addition to (i) – (vii) units are advised to consider with justification special cases e.g. needy applicants, gender balance and applicants living with disability.

Applicants should submit their application documents to their respective Deans by 19th April 2024.
