The People's Republic of China is set to officially handover a new building complex to the Confucius Institute at University of Nairobi on Friday 28th May, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. The new building complex which has been funded by China, will be handed over by the Ambassador of China in Kenya Hon. Wu Peng. The occasion will be graced by the Honorable Cabinet Secretary of Education Prof. George Magoha, the Chancellor Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama and other dignitaries.

Confucius Institute at University of Nairobi was launched, as the first Confucius Institute in Africa on 19th December, 2005. His Excellency, the president of People’s Republic of China, Mr. Hu Jintao, met the students and teachers on his visit to Kenya in 2006 when he announced the setting up of the complex.  The Confucius Institute at University of Nairobi has been voted top 20 Confucius Institutes with the excellent awards five times in succession from 2007 to the end of 2011.

The new building complex is located along the Arboretum Drive, Nairobi and will now be home to faculty/administration offices and lecture halls for the staff and students in the institute. The Chinese government provided grant funding for the project to the tune of Ksh 1.4 billion while the university provided prime land measuring 3 acres with a market value of Ksh 900 million.
