On Monday, 18th May 2026, the University of Nairobi ushered in a new chapter in its academic leadership following the handing over of the Academic Affairs Division by the Vice Chancellor, Eng. Prof. Ayub N. Gitau to Prof. John Demesi Mande, who took over as Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs). In his handover message, Eng. Prof. Gitau welcomed Prof. Mande to the role and wished him wisdom, strength, and success as he assumes responsibility for one of the University’s most critical divisions.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor outlined the central role of the Academic Affairs Division in coordinating teaching, learning, examinations, admissions, quality assurance, student affairs, and graduation processes across the University. He highlighted ongoing reforms and key activities within the Division, including curriculum reviews, programme accreditation, implementation of the Competency-Based Education and Training (CBET) framework, digitization of student records, and preparations for the University’s 75th graduation ceremony. He also underscored the University’s continued commitment to maintaining academic standards, improving service delivery, and strengthening institutional governance.
At the same time, the Vice Chancellor pointed to several challenges affecting the Division, among them staff shortages in some sections and financial constraints. He emphasized the need to consolidate gains made in strengthening staffing capacity, enhancing coordination across units, and providing consistent support for academic operations to sustain the University’s core mandate. In conclusion, the Vice Chancellor expressed confidence in Prof. Mande’s leadership and reaffirmed the University’s commitment to advancing quality university education, research, and innovation in service to society.
