The Office of Career Services wishes to notify all staff and students that the 2021 Two-Year Worldwide IBM PhD Fellowship for the academic years of 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 is now open for applications.   Strong collaboration with faculty, students and universities is vital to IBM.  The IBM PhD Fellowship Program advances this collaboration by recognizing and supporting exceptional PhD students who want to make their mark in promising and disruptive technologies. Focus areas include the following topics of particular interest: • Hybrid Cloud • Quantum Computing / Quantum Systems • Artificial Intelligence • Cloud / Open Source Technologies • Security / Cyber Security • Data Science • Systems The 2021 two-year IBM PhD Fellowships are awarded worldwide. • U.S. country awards are $60,000 in award year one and $35,000 in award year two. • Other country awards vary between $6,000-$25,000 each award year depending on the country. Additional Information: Students must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member. The nominator provides the supporting documentation (resume, list of publications, thesis topic, etc.), categorizes the student's initial career interests, and submits the nomination for evaluation. All IBM PhD Fellowship awardees are matched with an IBM mentor according to their technical interests and are encouraged to participate in an internship at least once while completing their studies. Students receiving a comparable fellowship or internship from another company or institution during the same academic period may not be eligible for an IBM PhD Fellowship. Students should have three years remaining in their graduate program at the time of nomination. For example, nominees that are enrolled in a four-year graduate program should have completed two years of their graduate program as of summer 2021 in order to benefit the most. IBM has received many outstanding and exceptional candidates from universities all over the world in the past and encourages universities to submit nominations by October 23, 2020. The IBM PhD Fellowship program also supports long-standing commitment to workforce diversity and encourages nominations of women, minorities and all who contribute to that diversity. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise (DVC-RIE) wishes to inform all university faculty and staff, past and present nominations for the 50 Years of Excellence Outstanding Achiever Awards are now open. The University of Nairobi 50 Years of Excellence Outstanding Achiever Awards will be presented to individuals who have made significant contributions and demonstrated exemplary performance to the university's development and standing in the world from its early foundational years as the Royal Technical College (1956-1964) and the University College Nairobi (1964-1970), to its first 50 years as the University of Nairobi (1970-2020). University faculty and staff, past and present, may self-nominate or be nominated for all the award categories that they are eligible for. The nominators must be University of Nairobi faculty and staff, past or present. A document detailing the Awards and the Nomination Form are attached in the email communique sent on Oct 1, 2020 at 12:01 p.m.  Applications for nominations shall open on October 1, 2020 and close on October 31, 2020. All applications forms, once completed, should be converted to .pdf and submitted via email to dvcrie@uonbi.ac.ke.

The Office of Career Services wishes to notify all staff and students that the Call for the 2020 EAC Scholarship programme is out. The EAC Scholarship Programme is an initiative of the East African Community (EAC), the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) and German Development Bank- KfW. The project begun in 2018 when the EAC and IUCEA entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with KfW geared towards the training of students within the EAC Region. This Project aims at creating future change agents, who identify themselves with the integration agenda of the EAC and are willing to share economic and development-oriented expert knowledge. The goal of this initiative is to contribute towards training leaders that will foster the EAC Regional integration.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs Professor Julius Ogeng'o will address First Year students 2020/21 (KCSE 2019) on Monday 31st August, 2020 at 9:00 a.m. The students will also be addressed by the Academic Registrar Mr. Humphrey Webuye, Director ICT Mr. Paul Kariuki and other senior officers of the University of Nairobi. To join the event one will require a laptop/desktop or smartphone with internet connection. The virtual address will be on the Microsoft Teams video conference platform. The students will also have to install Microsoft teams meeting application or alternatively join via any internet browser i.e Chrome, Firefox or Opera.

The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has announced the waiver of non-loanees compliance certificate application fees of Ksh. 1,000.00.The fee was levied to all applicants of the certificate of compliance irrespective of whether you are a loanee or not. This comes as a great relief to thousands of job seekers who had to part with their hard earned money to receive a certificate from an institution they never engaged with during their university studies. This therefore means all non-loanees will receive certificate free of charge. Other compliance certificates that are required during job applications are Certificate of Good Conduct, Tax Compliance Certificate etc.
