UoN alumnus, Dr. Patrick Amoth elected as WHO’s Executive Board Vice President

A University of Nairobi alumnus Dr. Patrick Omwanda Amoth has been elected to serve as the Vice President of the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO). Dr. Amoth who was elected alongside four other Vice Presidents during a virtual meeting on Friday May 22, 2020, will be representing the Africa region and will serve for a period of two years.

The University of Nairobi Chancellor Dr. Vijoo Rattansi has called for closer ties between Kenya and China so as to enhance more exchange of knowledge and skills. Speaking during the handing over of the University of Nairobi’s Ksh 1.4 billion Confucius Institute, Chancellor, Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, said that the University’s resolve to make the world a better place, can not be shaken despite the many challenges and the corona virus pandemic. She took the opportunity to thank, the County Government of Nairobi for the many concessions made during the construction of the building complex.

Iran in bid to set up Nanotechnology Centre at the University of Nairobi

Iran is bidding to set up a Nanoscience & Nanotechnology Centre at the University of Nairobi. The facility to be put up is to concentrate on research of all aspects of computational nanoscience, and to help promote the fields of nanoscience and nanotechnology across the country and around the region. This was revealed during talks between the Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama and the Ambassador of Iran to Kenya H. E. Barmaki, which will bring in Iranian universities to actualize the project.

China to hand over a new building complex to Confucius Institute at the University of Nairobi

The People's Republic of China is set to officially handover a new building complex to the Confucius Institute at University of Nairobi on Friday 28th May, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. The new building complex which has been funded by China, will be handed over by the Ambassador of China in Kenya Hon. Wu Peng. The occasion will be graced by the Honorable Cabinet Secretary of Education Prof. George Magoha, the Chancellor Dr. Vijoo Rattansi, the Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama and other dignitaries.

CASELAP administers End-of-Semester University Examinations Remotely

The Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law & Policy (CASELAP) achieved a milestone by successfully conducting its first ever end of semester University Examinations online. More than 20 students taking Master of Arts in Environmental Law and Master of Arts in Environmental Policy were able to sit for their examinations right from the comfort of their homes.

Cartoon Competition on COVID-19

Covid-19 Cartoon Festival

The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kenya, in collaboration with the University of Nairobi and East African Cartoonists' Society have organized for a virtual African cartoon festival on COVID-19 pandemic, as a way of enabling the populace share practical and home-built concepts on how to keep safe during this period and post period.

This festival is solely for African and Iranian cartoonists. The secretariat will receive the artworks of the cartoonist from all over Africa.

The Nation Leadership Forum

The UoN Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama was one of the panelists on NTV Live edition of the Nation Leadership Forum on 21st May, 2020, titled 'The Impact of Covid-19 on Education'. He expressed his hope of tertiary institutions fully adopting virtual teaching and learning. 

Other panelists were Dr. Sara Ruto, Chairperson, Covid-19 National Education Response Committee, Dr. Nicholas Letting, CEO KASNEB and Prof. Charles Ong’ondo, an Associate Professor, Faculty of Education at Moi University.

All administrative members of staff are invited to participate in a survey "Evaluation of Implementation of Online Learning - Administrative Staff".

The goal of this survey is to evaluate the implementation of online teaching, learning and supervision that has been taking place at the University during the COVID-19 period. 

The findings of this survey will be used to improve the various approaches that the university has put in place for the implementation of online learning.
