Intellectual Property & Research Output Commercialization Training

The Intellectual Property Management Office (IPMO) proposes to train staff, students and researchers from various units of the University, so that their research products and processes can be protected, moved along into the product development and commercialization phase for the benefit of the researcher, the University and the society. The training is intended to be practical and therefore the resource persons are drawn from invention/innovation incubation based organizations, inventors with commercialized Intellectual Property and those with relevant business skills. The training will be held using TEAMS® from 9.00 to 2.00 PM on Tuesday 10th November 2020. The resource persons will include Prof. Tom Ogada, Dr. Kenneth Chelule, Dr. Robert Karanja, Prof. Cyrus Iraya and Prof. Mary Kinoti.

All graduates of the 63rd Congregation for the conferment of degrees and award of diplomas held on September 25, 2020 are requested to collect their certificates at the University of Nairobi Central Examinations Centre, Chiromo Campus in the following order:

Announcement - UNSA November 2020 elections & the elections timelines

Prof. Mohamud Jama the Chairman of University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA) Electoral Commission wishes to announce that the UNSA online elections shall be held on Friday, November 13th, 2020. Prospective eligible candidates and students are advised to carefully familiarize themselves with the UNSA 2017 Constitution and the Rules and Regulations Governing the Organization, Conduct and Discipline of Students, which are available on the University of Nairobi Website http://www.uonbi.ac.ke/downloads. A soft copy of the UNSA Constitution has been circulated through your official University email address. The attention of candidates, their supporters and the entire student fraternity is drawn to the UNSA Electoral Code of Conduct 2017 (Schedule 4 of the UNSA Constitution) and to the UNSA elections offences and penalties 2017 (Schedule 5 of the UNSA Constitution) for their information and compliance.

Varsity Focus Magazine September 2020 – online version now published

The Director of Corporate Affairs Mr. John A.O Orindi wishes to notify all staff, students and members of the public that the online version of the Varsity Focus Magazine September 2020 is now out. The edition focuses on activities of the University for the first half of the year. This issue covers the installation of the 8th Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Kiama, who also shared his vision for the University. Appointment of Prof. Horace Ochanda as DVC-RIE

The Director of Corporate Affairs Mr. John Orindi wishes to notify all staff and students that Prof. Horace Ochanda was appointed Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise (DVC-RIE) with effect from 5th October 2020. He replaces Prof. Madara Ogot. Prof. Ochanda was the immediate Deputy Principal at the Kenya Science Campus and is Professor of Applied Parasitology, University of Nairobi. Born in 1960, he graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Education (Science) Honours degree in 1985 and a Master of Science (Parasitology) in 1988. In 1994, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy (Parasite Epidemiology) from the University of Warwick, UK. We at the Academic Division wish to congratulate Prof. Ochanda on his new role as the DVC-RIE.

Newly Launched DAAD Scholarship Programme: Leadership for Africa

Ms. Beate Schindler-Kovats the Director, DAAD Regional Office for Africa wishes to inform all staff and students that DAAD recently launched a new Leadership for Africa Scholarship Programme. The programme is open to bachelor’s degree holders who wish to pursue a master’s degree in Germany. The scholarship is open to applicants from Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia and Sudan. UoN@50 Reflections website - call for articles

The Deputy Vice Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise (DVC-RIE) is calling on the University Community to submit articles as part of the year-long celebrations for UON@50. The office of the DVC-RIE has brought online the UON@50 Reflections website: https://reflections.uonbi.ac.ke. This will be a year-long project to document the history of the University through the eyes of those who were (and are) there.  The articles will be categorised starting with the Foundation Years (1954-1970), the Inaugural Decade (1970s), followed by each decade to 2020s.  The submitted articles should be of archival nature.  Please pass this appeal onto others, who may have left the university (graduated, retired, etc).  Submission instructions are at the bottom of the main page, https://reflections.uonbi.ac.ke. The faculty members who wish to volunteer to join the Editorial Board are requested to send an email to dvcrie@uonbi.ac.ke and madaraogot@uonbi.ac.ke with the subject 'Reflections Editorial Board'. Members of the Board shall vet and recommend the articles to be published.

IBM PhD Fellowship Program – calling for applications

The Office of Career Services wishes to notify all staff and students that the 2021 Two-Year Worldwide IBM PhD Fellowship for the academic years of 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 is now open for applications.   Strong collaboration with faculty, students and universities is vital to IBM.  The IBM PhD Fellowship Program advances this collaboration by recognizing and supporting exceptional PhD students who want to make their mark in promising and disruptive technologies. Focus areas include the following topics of particular interest: • Hybrid Cloud • Quantum Computing / Quantum Systems • Artificial Intelligence • Cloud / Open Source Technologies • Security / Cyber Security • Data Science • Systems The 2021 two-year IBM PhD Fellowships are awarded worldwide. • U.S. country awards are $60,000 in award year one and $35,000 in award year two. • Other country awards vary between $6,000-$25,000 each award year depending on the country. Additional Information: Students must be nominated by a doctoral faculty member. The nominator provides the supporting documentation (resume, list of publications, thesis topic, etc.), categorizes the student's initial career interests, and submits the nomination for evaluation. All IBM PhD Fellowship awardees are matched with an IBM mentor according to their technical interests and are encouraged to participate in an internship at least once while completing their studies. Students receiving a comparable fellowship or internship from another company or institution during the same academic period may not be eligible for an IBM PhD Fellowship. Students should have three years remaining in their graduate program at the time of nomination. For example, nominees that are enrolled in a four-year graduate program should have completed two years of their graduate program as of summer 2021 in order to benefit the most. IBM has received many outstanding and exceptional candidates from universities all over the world in the past and encourages universities to submit nominations by October 23, 2020. The IBM PhD Fellowship program also supports long-standing commitment to workforce diversity and encourages nominations of women, minorities and all who contribute to that diversity. 50 Years of Excellence Outstanding Achiever Awards - call for nominations

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise (DVC-RIE) wishes to inform all university faculty and staff, past and present nominations for the 50 Years of Excellence Outstanding Achiever Awards are now open. The University of Nairobi 50 Years of Excellence Outstanding Achiever Awards will be presented to individuals who have made significant contributions and demonstrated exemplary performance to the university's development and standing in the world from its early foundational years as the Royal Technical College (1956-1964) and the University College Nairobi (1964-1970), to its first 50 years as the University of Nairobi (1970-2020). University faculty and staff, past and present, may self-nominate or be nominated for all the award categories that they are eligible for. The nominators must be University of Nairobi faculty and staff, past or present. A document detailing the Awards and the Nomination Form are attached in the email communique sent on Oct 1, 2020 at 12:01 p.m.  Applications for nominations shall open on October 1, 2020 and close on October 31, 2020. All applications forms, once completed, should be converted to .pdf and submitted via email to dvcrie@uonbi.ac.ke.

Kenya Policy Briefs - Volume 1 Issue 2 is NOW Published

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Enterprise (DVC-RIE) wishes to notify all staff, students and members of the public that the Kenya Policy Briefs journal Volume 1 No. 2 has now been published. The Kenya Policy Briefs presents translations of research results from universities and research institutes for a policymaker and media audience. It targets those who formulate or influence policy.
