Prof. Jeremiah Kalai urges the Government to re-think its financing of higher education

Professor Jeremiah Kalai has called on the National Government to re-think its investment in research and financing of higher education. Review fiscal & education policies due to socio-economic effects on children ~ Dr. Andrew Riechi

Dr. Andrew Rasugu Otachi Riechi calls for an urgent review of fiscal and education policies so as to address the socio-economic dimensions affecting the lives of children in a myriad of ways during the Covid-19 pandemic. He states that‘’ Due to prolonged confinement, children are being separated from their peers and teachers and deprived of socializing activities, including sports. National and state/county governments should consider mobilizing resources from development partners and international agencies to put up the necessary infrastructures for digital learning management systems, going forward.’’ Dr. Riechi wrote in his article that was published on the website https://eap.uonbi.ac.ke/ of the Department of Educational Administration & Planning, University Of Nairobi.

Scholarship opportunity for PhD students with disabilities

PENDA Consortium invites applications for full-time scholarship for one researcher with disabilities to conduct research to improve the evidence surrounding Disability Inclusive Development. The PhD will be based at the University of Nairobi's School of Public Health with additional support and supervision from the International Centre for Evidence in Disability at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM). 

Call for applications: Scholarship for students with disabilities

Development Pathways is calling for applications for the Krystle Kabare Scholarship. One Kenyan student with disabilities will be awarded full scholarship to study a Master's degree tenable only at the University of Nairobi in September 2020. The closing date for applications is 19th June, 2020. The scholarship was set up to honour the memory of the late Krystle Kabare. Before her untimely passing, Krystle was working at Development Pathway and had a keen interest in promoting the rights of persons with disabilities.

Prof. Enos Njeru & Prof. Margaret Hutchinson elevated to positions of Deputy Vice Chancellors

The University of Nairobi Vice Chancellor Prof. Stephen Kiama has appointed Prof. Enos Nthia Njeru and Prof. Margaret Jesang Hutchinson to the positions of Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Human Resources & Administration) and Ag. Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance, Planning & Development) respectively. Prior to these new appointments, Prof. Njeru was the Principal, College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) and Prof. Hutchinson was the Chair, Department of Plant Science and Crop Protection in the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences (CAVS).

Call for academic articles from the UoN faculty staff members

Prof. Madara Ogot is calling on faculty members of staff at the University of Nairobi to write academic articles for publishing in the Research, Innovation and Enterprise (RIE) Blog. The Office of RIE created the Blog, https://uonresearch.org/blog/,  as an avenue for University Faculty to publish insightful articles with a focus on the COVID-19 Pandemic. However, Prof. Ogot is now calling for articles covering ALL topics and subject areas of interest to the public. He welcomed the faculty to leverage on their academic expertise and experience but present the articles at the level of the general reader.

Dr. Alice Odingo calls for policy formulations to help protect sites & support farmers of herbal medicine

Dr. Alice Atieno Odingo has called on the National Government to prioritize the formulation of a policy to protect sites and support farmers of herbal medicine. In her article entitled ‘COVID-19: Can Herbal Medicine provide the much needed cure?’ she says, ‘’Policy formulations are required to conserve the sites which are rich in herbal medicines, support farmers that grow and preserve these biological resources, establish a structure for collection, processing and patenting for commercial use as well as enhancing collaboration between herbal and conventional medical practitioners.’’  

Notice to all staff on review of the Disability Policy

The Director of ICT Mr. Paul Kariuki wishes to notify all staff of University of Nairobi that the process of reviewing the Disability Policy is currently ongoing. One of the tasks the committee dealing with this responsibility is to collect and validate data on all staff with different forms of disabilities. This data will  be used for planning and enhancing the support given to staff in this category. 

Prof. Kiama installed as the 8th VC at University of Nairobi

Professor Stephen Gitahi Kiama (56) has officially been installed as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Nairobi, taking over from Professor Peter Mulwa Mbithi. During his installation in Taifa Hall on June 05, 2020, past VCs, staff, students and industrial relations leaders paid glowing tribute to the new VC. Professor Kiama is a Kenyan veterinary surgeon and academic who, effective 3rd January 2020, became the 8th Vice Chancellor, University of Nairobi. The occasion was marked with colour and pomp and was graced by Dr.Vijoo Rattansi the Chancellor and Prof. Julia Ojiambo, the Chair of University Council.
